Why Jebel Akhdar Feels Much Cooler Than Muscat
Hikers traveling from Muscat’s coastline to Jebel Akhdar quickly notice a dramatic temperature drop. While Muscat sits at sea level along the Gulf of Oman, Jebel Akhdar rises more than 2,000 meters above sea level in Oman’s Al Hajar Mountains.
Because temperature typically drops about 6.5°C for every 1,000 meters of elevation, the mountain plateau can feel significantly cooler than the coastal capital.
Typical summer differences include:
- Muscat afternoon temperature: 38°C to 44°C
• Jebel Akhdar plateau temperature: 22°C to 30°C
This means hikers can experience a 12°C to 18°C difference within a two-hour drive.
Elevation and the Mountain Climate
Jebel Akhdar, meaning “The Green Mountain,” is one of the highest and coolest regions in northern Oman. Its altitude creates a mountain microclimate that contrasts sharply with the hot and humid coastal conditions of Muscat.
At around 2,000–2,980 meters elevation, temperatures are consistently lower. Nights can even become chilly, especially between November and February.
Typical winter temperatures on the plateau:
- Daytime: 10°C to 20°C
• Nighttime: 0°C to 8°C
Meanwhile, Muscat winter temperatures remain mild, usually between 18°C and 28°C.
Humidity Differences Between the Coast and the Mountains
Another major change hikers notice is humidity. Muscat’s coastal climate is strongly influenced by the Gulf of Oman, which raises humidity levels, particularly during summer.
Summer humidity comparison:
- Muscat: 60% to 85% humidity
• Jebel Akhdar: 20% to 40% humidity
Lower humidity in the mountains makes the air feel cooler and more comfortable for hiking, even during warmer months.
Wind and Weather Conditions on the Plateau
Wind exposure is another important factor on Jebel Akhdar. The open plateau and steep cliffs allow stronger airflow compared to Muscat’s urban coastline.
Common mountain weather features include:
- Afternoon mountain breezes
• Sudden temperature drops after sunset
• Occasional winter frost at higher elevations
During winter cold waves in northern Oman, Jebel Akhdar can even record temperatures close to freezing.
Best Seasons for Hiking Jebel Akhdar
The cooler climate makes Jebel Akhdar one of Oman’s best hiking destinations year-round, but some seasons are more comfortable than others.
Best hiking periods:
- October to April for mild temperatures
• March to April during the famous rose blooming season
• Early morning hikes during summer
Summer hiking is possible but should start before sunrise due to strong daytime sun.
Packing for the Temperature Shift
Many hikers underestimate the temperature difference between Muscat and Jebel Akhdar. Packing correctly is essential.
Recommended hiking gear:
- Light breathable clothing for daytime
• A warm jacket for evening temperatures
• Sun protection and sunglasses
• At least 2–3 liters of water per person
Even in summer, nighttime temperatures can feel surprisingly cool at higher elevations.
Safety Tip for Mountain Hikers
Weather in the Al Hajar Mountains can change quickly. Always check the latest forecast before hiking and prepare for cooler conditions than those on the Muscat coast.
